A Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) is a security solution designed to protect Wi-Fi networks from unauthorized access, malicious activities, and wireless-based cyber threats. Unlike traditional network security tools that mainly focus on wired connections, WIPS specifically monitors and defends wireless environments, ensuring that only approved devices and users can connect to the network. As wireless networks have become essential for businesses, hospitals, airports, educational institutions, and even smart homes, the demand for advanced wireless protection has significantly increased.
WIPS works by continuously scanning the airspace around a wireless network. It detects suspicious signals, rogue access points, unauthorized devices, and abnormal behavior that could indicate an attack. A rogue access point is one of the most common threats, where an unauthorized Wi-Fi access point is installed inside a company network, either intentionally by an employee or secretly by an attacker. Such rogue devices can create serious vulnerabilities because they bypass the organization’s firewall and other security layers. WIPS identifies these rogue access points and blocks them before they can be used for data theft or network infiltration.
